May 6, 2006, The Hamilton Area YMCA is hosting its 18th Annual Spring Ball
Fundraiser, honoring Thomas R. Smith for showing immeasurable community
leadership, sharing his time, energy and talents in an effort to provide
better opportunities for special needs children.
S.K.O.R. (Special Kids Organized Recreation)
S.K.O.R. evolved from Tom’s vision for a program offering special
needs children the same athletic and social opportunities that other kids enjoy. SKOR integrates special needs athletes with many teenagers from the community, who serve as buddies. Often the “buddies” find they share a lot in common and become great friends.
The S.K.O.R. Program is now hosted by the Hamilton YMCA, offering kids age 5-22 programs promoting physical fitness, teamwork, respect, self-esteem and lots of fun.
Tom led the partnership between the Hamilton YMCA and the Miracle League of Mercer County. On September 9, 2005, the first pitch was thrown out on the Miracle League Field, fulfilling the dreams of some very special kids who just wanted to play baseball.
